Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Camaro is available with three engines—two of which are outstanding. Chevy’s iconic small-block V-8 makes magnificent power and pulse-pounding sounds. The gutsy V-6 has its own distinctly searing soundtrack and redeems generations of ho-hum sixes. The standard six-speed manual transmission maintains the enthusiast spirit, and the eight-speed automatic snaps off quick shifts. Unfortunately, the Camaro’s entry-level turbocharged inline-four is less exhilarating than its two other engines. The hp mill isn’t horribly slow; we tested a manual model that made it to 60 mph in a respectable seconds. But uneven throttle response and unpleasant, unsporting sounds accompanied its dull demeanor. On the other hand, upgrading to the hp naturally aspirated V-6 completely improves the car’s character. However, both engines are overshadowed by the illustrious liter V-8 that’s standard in SS Camaros. Stat line: hp and lb-ft of torque. The Camaro has an astonishing chassis, providing a car-driver connection that’s unparalleled among pony cars. It’s taut on the track yet relaxed on regular roads. Paired with the 1LE , the V-6 and V-8 versions transcend their class—competing with cars costing much more. The Camaro's well-balanced ride is firm enough to be agile on curvy roads yet still compliant on rough surfaces. The Camaro SS has beefier chassis components and is available exclusively with adaptive dampers (known as Magnetic Ride Control). Its selectable drive modes—Touring, Sport, Track, and Weather—alter settings such as transmission tuning, suspension stiffness, stability-control limits, and steering effort. The lower trims have a similar drive-mode selector without the Track setting and adjustable suspension.

Fuel Economy

EPA fuel economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Camaro's interior is an improvement on the previous generation, with better materials and a more modern look. Its comfortable front seats and straightforward layout are high points, but its torturously small back seat and compromised visibility inhibit livability. The Camaro cradles front passengers with nicely bolstered seats; the available Recaro front buckets improve support for hard cornering without being too restrictive. The Camaro’s dashboard design is clean, and the driver has a gauge cluster with an available inch configurable display. While the screen and analog gauges are easy to read, the large housing looks bulky. An optional head-up display is useful, and it's not offered on the Challenger or Mustang. The Camaro outshines its rivals on the track and in the fun-to-drive department but is outmatched in terms of cargo space and storage. It holds the least amount of carry-on luggage, and it has even less interior storage than its already stingy competitors. As with cargo volume, the Camaro has less space than its rivals to store small items in its cabin.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every Camaro has a version of the wonderful MyLink touchscreen infotainment system, unlike some rivals that feature outdated non-touch systems. Chevy’s setup has it all standard—intuitive controls, attractive menus, responsive feedback, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. The standard inch touchscreen is full of features and includes a month subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. A three-month OnStar Guidance plan for emergencies is standard, too. An inch unit is available, as are navigation, a premium Bose stereo system, and wireless charging. While the large touchscreen fills the space better, the plastic bezel looks chintzy, and its downward angle is awkward. Otherwise, its mix of controls and organized menus is appreciated. The Chevrolet MyLink system is effortless in operation, and its response times are consistently quicker than popular smartphones.

The Chevrolet Camaro receives a new variant of the powerful Camaro ZL1 called the Camaro ZL1 1LE, a track-focused variant with a full aero kit to keep the car planted. The Camaro ZL1 1LE also features special wheels and tires to keep it light, and an adjustable suspension.

Vehicle Summary

The Chevrolet Camaro is a rear-drive sports car that slots below the Corvette and is available in a number of variants including the track-oriented 1LE model. In addition to the coupe, a convertible variant is available.


The Camaro lineup includes four engines that can be paired to a manual or automatic transmission. As soon as we learn more about the Camaro aside from the new ZL1 1LE model, we'll update this space (we don't expect the lineup to change much, if at all).

What We Think

In a First Test, we said the Camaro ZL1 offers impeccable performance, with strong acceleration and the same excellent handling that the current generation Camaro is known for. Additionally, the car is at home at the track, even without the 1LE package, making it an excellent all-around high-performance sports car.

The less powerful Camaro V6 1LE paced fourth in a  comparison test due to its long brake pedal travel and shifter that's not as crisp as the one found on the SS 1LE. It also lacks Mgnetic Ride Control and the electronically operated limited-slip differential, which means it doesn't have the same level of capability as its Vpowered bretheren. However, the car is exceptionally neutral and it's hard to make it understeer, giving it great balance and confident handling.

In a four-cylinder pony car comparison test with the Ford Mustang EcoBoost, the Camaro with the liter turbo-four lost due to it wearing all-season tires, which was what dragged the car down, particularly its handling and braking. The car's engine, on the other hand, is energetic and isn't as laggy as the liter turbo-four we've experienced in the pre Mustang EcoBoost.

The Chevy Camaro fun-machine is all about choice, with a dozen variations counting both convertible and coupe versions of six trims. Whether your idea of fun is a sprightly jaunt around town, smoking Christmas tree-style greenlight takeoffs, or tire-shredding apex conquests, the Camaro coupe and convertibles are ready to play.

The Camaro lineup carries over unchanged from the model year with one notable exception for the ZL1 trim.

Chevy introduced the full-out Camaro ZL1 with its horsepower supercharged liter V8 in The ZL1 can be ordered with the 1LE Extreme Track Package to make the previously most badass Camaro even badder. The 1LE kit is possibly due to the ZL1&#;s failure to hit miles per hour at the Papenburg High-Speed Oval in Germany, prompting Chevy&#;s engineers to sharpen pencils.

Engines and transmissions

Depending on the trim, Camaros have one of four engines.

LS and LT Camaros come standard with a liter turbocharged DOHC inline-four with hp at 5, rpm and pound-feet of torque from 3, to 4, rpm. The LS and LT trims can also upgrade to a hp liter V6 direct injection engine. The V6&#;s maximum lb-ft comes on at 5, rpm.

Both Camaro SS trims run on a naturally-aspirated, hp liter V8 that matches its horsepower with a torque rating of lb-ft at 4, rpm.

The ZL1&#;s supercharged version of the liter V8 produces hp at 6, rpm and lb-ft at 3, rpm.

How to choose a Camaro

Camaro 1LS, 1LT, 2LT

With bases prices for Camaro coupes ranging from $26, for the 1LS to $62, for the ZL1, price is the most significant factor when choosing trims.

If cost were no object, the rational decision would be to buy the vehicle that matches the need. But let&#;s be real. People buy Camaros (or Corvettes, or Mustangs) based on what they want, not what they need. So, with eyes wide open, decide how much Camaro go-power you&#;re willing to shell out for, and that&#;s your ride. Don&#;t give a second thought to the fact that most drivers will seldom, if ever, use the Camaro&#;s full potential.

The first performance level for Camaros, the LS and LTs, come with either a turbocharged hp four-cylinder engine or an optional hp V6. Transmission choices are a Tremec six-speed manual and an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, but we aware that the 1LS is available only with the manual transmission and the 1LT only with the automatic. The manual transmission is standard equipment for the 2LT, but the automatic is an option.

Two upgrade packages are available for all LS and LT trims, one for appearance and the other for functional upgrades. The $2, Redline Edition includes black front and rear bowtie emblems, a red-accented grille, hash mark graphic, decklid blackout graphic, dark-finish taillamps, black outside mirrors, and inch black aluminum wheels with red accents. The $1, RS package includes inch aluminum wheels, HID headlamps, LED taillamps, plus RS-specific upper and lower grilles and rear spoiler.

 Camaro 1LS

The base-level Camaro 1LS starts at $26, in the coupe version and $32, for the convertible. The $6, extra for the convertible holds for all Camaro trims. Standard 1LS equipment includes inch aluminum wheels, a cloth eight-way power adjustable driver&#;s seat, six-way power adjustable front passenger seats, and single-zone manual air conditioning. Additional standard features include power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, power mirrors, and LED daytime running lamps.

Chevrolet MyLink with a 7-inch-diagonal color touchscreen, AM/FM audio system with six speakers, Bluetooth wireless for phones and streaming audio, andOnStar Guidance Plan and Satellite Radio trial subscriptions are all included with the Camaro 1LS.

 Camaro 1LT

The Camaro 1LT, $27, to start for the coupe and $33, for the convertible, upgrade the 1LS with an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, USB port and auxiliary jack, illuminated sun visors, Halogen projector-beam headlamps, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

When configured with a V6 engine, the 1LT can also be fitted with the $4, 1LE Package for LT. This performance upgrade includes an FE3 suspension, Brembo brakes, and heavy-duty cooling, black hood wrap, front splitter, mirrors, rear blade spoiler, inch forged aluminum wheels, limited-slip differential, and performance exhaust system.

 Camaro 2LT

Starting at $31, in coupe format and $37, for the convertible, the Camaro 2LT has heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats, an 8-inch-diagonal color touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, a frameless electrochromic ISRV mirror, and a Bose Premium nine-speaker audio system.

The $2, Convenience and Lighting Package takes the 2LT even further upstream with comfort, convenience, and safety features. The Convenience and Lighting Package includes the Camaro Memory Package, wireless charging, heated steering wheel, multicolor driver information display, and head-up display. Heated outside mirrors with driver-side auto dimming, interior spectrum lighting, illuminated sill plates and aluminum accents on the door trim and shifter cap are also included. Passive driver assistance equipment in the upgrade package includes rear parking assistance, blind zone monitoring with lane change awareness, and rear cross-traffic alerts.

The Camaro SS and ZL1 models climb the performance ladder many rungs. Power comes from liter V8s. A naturally aspirated V8 hits hp for the 1SS and 2SS while the supercharged liter cranks out ponies with the same level of torque.

The Camaro 1SS costs $37, to start in coupe format or $43, for a droptop. The hp V8 uses a Tremec six-speed with automatic rev-matching or an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic. The 1SS standard equipment list includes inch aluminum wheels with summer-only performance run-flat tires, Brembo performance four-wheel disc brakes, HID headlamps with LED signature lighting accents, and an uplevel instrument cluster.

A $7, 1LE Performance Package for the 1SS with the manual transmission includes an electronic limited-slip differential, specific chassis tuning, and Chevy&#;s Magnetic Ride Control active suspension.

 Camaro 2SS

Starting at $42, for the coupe and $48, in the convertible version, the Camaro 2SS adds the following to the 1SS: heated/ventilated leather-appointed power eight-way driver and six-way front passenger seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a Bose premium audio system. The 2SS has illuminated sill plates, interior spectrum lighting, uplevel interior décor accents, a heated steering wheel, head-up display, wireless charging pad, and memory settings for the driver seat and exterior mirrors. Rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and side blind zone alert with lane change alert are standard on the 2SS.

If your definition of fun doesn&#;t allow compromise, your Camaro is the ZL1, starting at $62, for the coupe and $68, for the convertible version. This car&#;s LT4 supercharged liter V8 knocks out hp and lb-ft with either the Tremec six-speed manual with automatic rev-matching or a speed paddle-shift automatic.

The ZL1 has 11 powertrain-cooling heat exchangers, a specially calibrated Magnetic Ride suspension, electronic limited-slip differential, unique inch forged aluminum wheels, Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires, and Brembo front and rear brakes. Standard ZL1 features also include a dual-mode exhaust with quad exhaust tips, performance traction management, Recaro performance seats, and a short-throw shifter. Adding to the exterior, the ZL1 has a unique front fascia with larger cooling ducts, wide front fenders, specific rocker moldings and rear diffuser, and a distinct hood with carbon-fiber air extractor.

Available for the ZL1 coupe only, the $7, 1LE Extreme Track Package includes a carbon fiber rear wing, racing-derived Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers, an adjustable front-end ride height, camber plates, and a rear stabilizer bar. The package also comes with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires, and lighter wheels and dampers. In a nod to racers who drive the same car home at the end of the day, this package also includes dual-zone automatic climate control, Bose premium audio, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
