Husqvarna 61 Information
By Turner Anderson
The Husqvarna 61 chainsaw is ideally designed for a chainsaw user who needs to do some occasional high-powered cutting. This saw can be equipped with a 15- to 20-inch bar, depending on your cutting applications. For larger felling or cutting jobs, use a longer bar. The Husqvarna 61 also comes with all the safety features a chainsaw user depends on, including the inertia-activated chain brake.
The 61.5 cubic centimeter engine powers the forged three-piece crankshaft, which offers increased durability when operating under heavier loads. The strong crankshaft, backed by a magnesium crankcase is especially needed when cutting harder and thicker wood. The more power your saw has, the easier it will slice through harder types of wood.
The Husqvarna 61 can be outfitted with bars 15 to 20 inches in length. Using a longer bar, like the 20-inch bar, will allow you to cut wider trees than using shorter bars. The longer bar lets you cover more cutting surface of the tree's trunk. The chains that are compatible with these bars must be three-eighths inch pitch and .058 inch gauge. At maximum power, the chain can reach speeds up to 60 feet per second. Always keep your chain sharpened to get the most efficient cutting power out of your Husqvarna 61 chainsaw.
The ergonomics of a chainsaw are important to maintain the natural operating movements and positions you make while cutting. The Husqvarna 61 ergonomic features include an angled handle that offers a better grip. It's also equipped with Husqvarna's Low-Vib system that uses vibration dampening engine mounts to reduce the constant vibrations of the engine. Lower vibrations reduce operator fatigue, allowing you to work for longer periods of time.
The Husqvarna 61 uses an inertia-activated chain brake that stops the chain from rotating if the chainsaw kicks back when the upper tip of the chainsaw bar contacts the cutting surface. Be careful to keep the bar angled properly to avoid a kickback. The chain can also be stopped by pressing the chain brake lever forward. The rear handle guard on the Husqvarna 61 protects the operator's right hand if the chain were to brake or derail off the bar. On the base of the saw, there is a chain catcher attachment to catch the chain if it falls off the bar while operating.

If it has 150 PSI, I probably would not change the top end. Having not run a 272xp, you will not miss the extra juice. If it ever starts to give you trouble, you can go to a 50mm 266xp top end that will bolt right on and have some more power. Right now you likely have a 48mm open-port top end. It will probably last forever. These saws have a two-piece ignition that is not uncommon to fail. Other than that, they're tough as nails. here is what I would check:
1. A/V mounts (there are 6) are usually cracked or broken. If they are too loose you'll end up with a hole in the fuel tank or engine.
2. Fuel line and filter. Easy to check and cheap to replace. If there is any question just replace it.
3. Air filter. I have seen some pretty wonky ones on these older saws. If there is any gunk in the carb bore, filter is not working well
4. Clutch side crank seal. While you have the clutch off changing the spring, look at the seal in there. It is very easy to change, since it is in the oil pump. If it looks hard, just replace.
5. Muffler. I have seen several of these with rusted mufflers. Stray exhaust WILL burn through the topcover in short order. Most of the white-tops are missing a louver or two over the muffler already.
Good luck, and congrats on a good saw. Post up some pics already!
