Hyderabad, Jan 7: A day after his death, sources claimed that depression might have driven Telugu actor Uday Kiran to end his life. Hyderabad Police, meanwhile, confirmed that the young actor committed suicide. However, they did not find any suicide note so far.

33-year-old Kiran was known as a hat trick hero as he had delivered super hit movies with his debut in Tollywood industry. However, recently, has was not getting any movie offer which apparently depressed him. [Read: Actor Uday Kiran, a victim of caste politics in Tollywood?]

A new controversy has emerged soon after Kiran's death. A section of the Telugu film industry started claiming that Kiran was a victim of caste system of the cine world. He was deliberately sidelined by the top stars and producers after his fabulous initial years.

According to media report, a group representing Brahmins (Kiran's caste-group) alleged that two castes - Kamma and Kapu (to which a majority of Telugu heroes including the top four like Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna belong to) do not allow others to grow in the industry that produces highest number of films in the country after Hindi.

However, Telugu Movie Artists Association President Murali Mohan overruled such reports. He, however, admitted to the importance of caste in the Telugu film industry.

Mohan was quoted as saying, "Till the Telugu movie industry was based in Chennai caste was not a factor but things have changed after it moved to Hyderabad."

A lawyer, meanwhile, moved State Human Rights Commission and sought investigation into the suicide case. Arun Kumar, who filed the petition, alleged that four families were ruling the Telugu film industry and cited this as the cause for Kiran's suicide.

Kiran's wife Vishita found his body hanging in their flat in Hyderabad. She soon rushed him to Apollo Hospital at Jubilee Hills where the actor was declared brought dead.

Kiran earlier was engaged to actor-turn-politician Chiranjeevi's daughter. However, the marriage was called off due to some unknown reason(s). Later he tied the knot with his long-time friend Vishita.

Big '4' blamed for Uday Kiran suicide

Hyderabad: CLUES team officials said Uday Kiran used a rope tied to the hook on the ceiling and a stool in the private gymnasium set up in his three-bedroom flat. “The prominent ligature mark found on his neck and other details on the scene suggested suicide,” said an official.

Uday’s wife Vishitha, who was attending a birthday party, returned home with her parents after midnight and found the actor’s body. They rushed him to the Apollo Hospital at Jubilee Hills, where the doctors declared him dead.

Police officials, who seized the mobile phone, laptop and personal belongings of the actor, found that Uday had exchanged SMSes with Vishitha before he died. He had sent a message asking what was up with her. Vishitha, who was celebrating her friend’s birthday, had replied she would return home and that her phone’s charge was almost over.

“He sent her a message saying ‘I love you’. After a while, Vishitha went to her parents’ house and recharged her phone and called him. However, he did not respond,” said Banjara Hills ACP Ashok Kumar.

Vishitha and her parents rushed to the house but found it locked. Vishitha entered the flat with the second key and found him hanging, cops said. Sources said Uday had called a few friends and had indicated that he could not live anymore. Cops are verifying these facts.

The actors’ body, which was preserved at the Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills, till morning, was taken to OGH for post-mortem exam. Later it was taken to Nims and preserved there for his sister, who is out of station.

Sources said that cremation will take place on Tuesday. The body will be taken to the Film Chamber at 10 am and will later be cremated at ESI Erragadda Smashana Vatika.

Meanwhile, Arun Kumar, a High Court advocate, approached the State Human Right Commission seeking a probe into Uday Kiran’s death.  Kumar alleged that Uday was sidelined by the four big Tollywood camps, and action should be taken against them.

“After his engagement to Chiranjeevi’s daughter was called off, the four big camps — Chiranjeevi family, Daggubati family, NTR family and Dil Raju camp — kept him out of work using their powers. He was not allowed to grow in the industry. We demand a strong actions against these four camps,” said Kumar. However, SHRC officials advised him to approach police. Kumar said he would approach the city police commissioner on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, the members of AP Brahmin Seva Sangh alleged that Uday was discriminated against by prominent camps of Tollywood since he was a Brahmin.

NextCounselling, a Tollywood taboo

Counselling, a Tollywood taboo

Hyderabad: In the wake of actor Uday Kiran’s alleged suicide, psychiatrists say that hardly anyone in Tollywood seeks help for anxiety, depression or other psychological stress.

It is not only taboo in the industry, but the fraternity is very closely knit, they say. There is always a fear that someone will know and this keeps most of them away. But those who do seek help do so in the guise of alcohol or substance abuse and it is during these interventions that the deep-seated problems come to the fore.

Psychiatrist Dr Praveen Kumar C. of Apollo Hospitals said, “Most of them come with some other problem and it is during investigations that the core issue slowly come to the fore. The problems begin during low times of their life and due to weak support systems, most of them collapse. The other problem faced by most of them is that they are good in only one line of work and hence do not acquire other  skills. Methods of diverting the mind or opting for other means of livelihood are very limited. Most of them end up caging themselves and this proves disastrous for them.”

The problem, state mental health experts, is that most of these people are always chasing a dream. Psychologist Dr Shobana Srivastava of Care Hospital said, “For actors, the exertion of emotion quotient is very high and their aspirations tend to always be towards higher goals. A downslide means disaster for them. Their environment does not support or empathise with them and this often ends up taking a toll.”

A very small number does make its way, but in a highly confidential environment. Most often the meetings are disguised or given a different name for fear of being identified or spotted. Dr P.K. Choudhary of Chetana Hospital said, “Some of them who have sought help have shown symptoms of Affective Bipolar Disorder where the phases of mania and depression are rampant. Their underlying disease comes to the fore because of their circumstances and it often tends to aggravate it.

The passion for their profession makes them blind towards other aspects of life and that tends to hit back very badly during the phases of failure.” Psychiatrists state that family members have an added responsibility during low times and they must always be alert as that is the best method to protect them from taking disastrous steps.

Reason revealed behind Uday Kiran's death: Not Chiru

Actor Uday Kiran died on January 5, 2014, by committing suicide. It was a deep shock to family members and Tollywood celebrities. There was no exact reason came out behind his suicide but few people had blamed Mega Star Chiranjeevi.

Lately, Uday Kiran's sister revealed some true facts behind his death and stated some incidents about him to a Youtube Channel. With that video, it is clear that Uday Kiran himself was responsible for his death.

Uday Kiran's sister said, "Chiranjeevi garu extended support to Uday even before the latter's engagement. When Uday was in a painful situation (during a breakup with lady journalist) Chiranjeevi garu extended moral support to him. He, further, decided to do his daughter Sushmitha's marriage with Uday. Once we all visited Chiranjeevi garu's home and had a wonderful treat from his family. It was Uday, who himself, decided to get his engagement broken up with Chiranjeevi garu's daughter. Perhaps, my brother thought that he can't adjust with their family which prompted him taking such decision.

Later, Uday Kiran got married with Vishitha but their relationship has gone in hardship and they never been a happy couple. Whenever her sister Uday Kiran is to speak but not Vishitha."

Uday Kiran

Indian film actor

Vajapeyajula Uday Kiran (26 June 1980 – 5 January 2014) was an Indian actor who primarily worked in the Telugu films. His first three films, Chitram, Nuvvu Nenu and Manasantha Nuvve, were successful hits, earning him the title "Hat-trick Hero".[4][5]

In 2001, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor - Telugu[6] for the film Nuvvu Nenu, and became the youngest winner of the Filmfare best actor award after Tamil actor Kamal Haasan. In 2006, he made his Tamil debut with the film Poi, directed by veteran K. Balachander.[7] Subsequently, he starred in romantic films including Nee Sneham and Kalusukovalani. His other performances have been in the films Sreeram, Avunanna Kaadanna, Nuvvekaddunte Nenakkadunta and Jai Sriram.[8] Kiran died by suicide at his home in Hyderabad in January 2014.[9]

Early life[edit]

Vajapeyajula Uday Kiran was born on 26 June 1980 to VVK Murthy and Nirmala of Vijayawada.[2][10] He did his schooling from K V Picket School and graduated from Wesley Degree College, Secunderabad.[11]

He had an older brother and has an older sister. His mother died when he was very young. Singer Parnika is his maternal cousin.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

Kiran started modelling while he was in college. He made his film debut in the Hinglish film Mysterious Girl in 1999.[12] In 2000, Kiran made his Telugu debut under his mentor, cinematographer turned film director Teja with the film Chitram, in which he played the 17-year-old lead character.[13]

This film, followed by two other films, Nuvvu Nenu and Manasantha Nuvve, made him among the very few actors in Telugu cinema to deliver three consecutive successful films. His performance as a hot-blooded youngster in Nuvvu Nenu won him the Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu) in the year 2001.

In his fourth film, Kalusukovalani, he displayed his dancing skills through the songs, "Udayinchina" and "Cheliya Cheliya". In his fifth film, Sreeram, he ventured into an action-oriented story of a youngster aspiring to become a top cop. 2002 saw him in Nee Sneham, another blockbuster movie of that year for which he was nominated for Filmfare Best Actor Award (Telugu) for the second time.

In 2005, he ventured into Tamil with the film Poi directed by K. Balachander. He then did two more films, Vambu Sandai and Pen Singam in Tamil, the latter being the story penned by M. Karunanidhi, which did moderately well at the box office.

Kiran last appeared in the 2013 film Jai Sriram.[14][15] A reviewer from The Times of India wrote, "From being a chubby lover boy with dimples showing on his cheeks to a man with muscles, Uday Kiran has metamorphosed as an actor. Such is his complete transformation that one is tempted to draw parallels to Nana Patekar."

Personal life[edit]

Kiran was engaged to Chiranjeevi's daughter Sushmitha in 2003,[16] but the engagement was called off.[17][18] He married Vishitha on 24 October 2012.[19][20]

Death[edit]

Kiran died on 5 January 2014 by suicide by hanging at his apartment in Srinagar colony, Hyderabad. He was aged 33.[9] No suicide note was found. The investigating Banjara Hills police suspected financial problems to be cause and a case of suspicious death was registered.[9][21] Kiran had suffered from depression due to financial crisis for almost a year.[22][23][24]

On 6 January 2014, Kiran's body was kept at the Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of Commerce and several film personalities including Dasari Narayana Rao, D. Ramanaidu, Venkatesh, D Suresh Babu, Srikanth, Shivaji, Tanikella Bharani, Chalapathi Rao, Tammareddy Bharadwaja, (ex) MLA Jaya Sudha, Paruchuri Gopala Krishna, Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao, Shivaji Raja, Anup Rubens, Samadra, Kadambari Kiran, Sunil and Anita were among those who paid their last respects to the actor, before being taken to the cremation grounds.[25] According to Andhra Pradesh Police, a young fan of Kiran allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at Komatapalli junction in Bobbili sub-division in Vizianagaram.[26]
