When dealing with a car as trustworthy as Volkswagen, it can be disheartening to discover that a part needs to be replaced. With that said, so many individual pieces work together under the hood to ensure the reliable performance you’ve come to love.
One of the more prominent parts in your Volkswagen is the gear shifter. There are a number of problems that can arise with the gear shifter, so keeping a vigilant eye on the common signs for these problems should always be your priority. If you notice any problems, don’t hesitate to bring your vehicle in to be serviced right away.
The Important Function of Your Gear Shifter
In short, the gear shifter ensures that your Volkswagen can reverse, drive forward, and stay in park. In an automatic vehicle, the gear shifter is known as the gear selector because that is all the driver needs to do.
In a traditional automatic vehicle, there is a released button that needs to be pressed to unlock the gear selector, typically while one foot is on the brake. There are a number of electronic components built into this system that keeps the car from shifting when it is not supposed to.
On the contrary, a manual gear shifter works a little differently. The gear shifter connects to the transmission, which is connected to the engine via the clutch. The system consists of a number of shafts that all connect in some shape or form to the gear shifter.
As the vehicle is put into a certain gear, the shifting stick moves into position and latches onto a selected gear. This signals to the transmission what speed it should be rotating with the engine. This is a very complex system that is used every time you drive anywhere. As such, problems can arise at any point and time.
Common Signs of Gear Shifter Issues
As mentioned, a number of issues can occur when it comes to gear shifting in your Volkswagen. Regardless of if you drive a manual or automatic vehicle, the gear shifter can have a few familiar problems that are easy to spot if you know the signs.
Indicating a Different Gear
If the gear shifter cable is not working properly, you may put the car into park but it still says you are in drive. As the years go by, the shifting cable can become worn out. For example, this can cause problems for you when you want to shift into drive but your car shows it is in the neutral position.
Loose Gear Shifter
Your gear shifter may come loose from aggressive gear changes. This can cause damage to the lower areas of the gear shifter levels. The sign of this is quite simply a loose gear shifter, which should be easy to spot. If this happens, it’s best to take your car in immediately for safety reasons, so that your VW’s transmission system does not become damaged further.
This problem may be indicative of something deeper within the transmission, but it could still be related to your gear shifter. If it seems like you are having a rough time changing gears or your vehicle is not acting how it should in a certain gear, this could be a sign that something is wrong and needs repair.
The Importance of Gear Shifter Maintenance
A problem with your gear shifter is a serious issue that should be addressed as soon as possible. Given that it connects directly to your transmission, a faulty gear shifter can have detrimental effects to the reliability and performance of your Volkswagen.
