Woman killed in crash on I-8 near La Mesa, alert infant taken in ambulance
A woman was killed Friday evening in a rollover crash on Interstate 8 in La Mesa, and firefighters took from the scene in an ambulance a baby who had been in her car, according to the California Highway Patrol and footage from the scene.
The single-car crash happened about 7:10 p.m. on the eastbound side of the freeway just east of state Route 125, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.
Witnesses told the Highway Patrol the vehicle rolled and flipped before landing on its wheels near the concrete center divider, according to the incident log. Several other drivers pulled over to try to help the occupants of the wrecked vehicle.
Footage from OnScene TV showed the driver, a woman, died at the scene despite the attempted life-saving efforts of firefighters. CHP officers requested personnel from the Medical Examiner’s Office about 20 minutes after the crash, according to the incident log.
Footage also showed firefighters taking a conscious, alert infant away from the scene in an ambulance. The baby did not appear to be seriously injured.
The crash prompted the closure of at least the two left lanes of the freeway for nearly three hours, according to the Highway Patrol and Caltrans San Diego. The lanes were reopened a little after 10 p.m.
