Gas prices continue to rise

Arizona gas prices are dropping slowly, despite big fall in cost of oil

The Arizona average of $2.62 a gallon Friday was well above the national average of $2.17, reported AAA. Certain states, like Florida ($2.10 a gallon) and Texas ($1.90) were even lower, while California was substantially higher at an average of $3.25 a gallon.

Arizona gasoline prices are dropping. Really.

That might not seem to obvious these days, especially in comparison to oil prices that have plunged amid the coronavirus-induced economic slowdown and increased pumping by foreign producers, especially Saudi Arabia.

But prices at the pump in metro Phoenix are trending lower and likely will continue to do so for at least a few weeks longer.

That doesn't mean gasoline is cheap here. The Arizona average of $2.62 a gallon Friday was well above the national average of $2.17, reported AAA. Certain states, like Florida ($2.10 a gallon) and Texas ($1.90) were even lower, while California was substantially higher at an average of $3.25 a gallon.

Gasoline prices are higher in many Western states. Arizona depends on a large amount of its supply from California, so prices here typically mirror those in that state, said Aldo Vazquez, a spokesman for AAA Arizona. Tighter environmental regulations, especially in California, also play a role.

Prices also vary widely within the state. Phoenix, at $2.73 a gallon, is a bit higher than the statewide average. So is Prescott, at $2.75. Conversely, regular gasoline averages $2.37 a gallon in Sierra Vista/Douglas and $2.29 in Tucson, according to AAA.

The higher prices have some readers scratching their heads, such as Phoenix resident David Wingo, who noticed the higher prices here compared to Tucson. "I think this is price gouging," he said in a note to The Arizona Republic. "Retailers of gasoline in Phoenix are making a fortune right now."

More price drops ahead

AAA anticipates the Arizona state average for regular gasoline will drop another 10 cents a gallon, potentially more, in the coming weeks, Vazquez said.

"There is no disruption to business or supply; gas stations are open and operating, there are no interruptions to the supply chain, and we have a lot of supply," he said in an email. "As more people move off the roads and stay home during this period of social distancing, we'll likely see (supplies) increase and gas move even cheaper."

Reflecting lower demand forecasts owing to less driving, reduced air travel and other fallout from the coronavirus-induced economic slowdown, the U.S. Energy Information Administration now predicts regular gasoline nationally will average $1.97 a gallon in April before rebounding a bit to an average of $2.13 a gallon from June through August.

Gasoline-price inputs

Crude oil itself isn't the only determinant of gasoline prices, which partly explains price variations among states.

In a typical gallon of regular gasoline, crude oil accounts for about 68% of the cost, taxes are next at 15%, distributing/marketing weighs in at 10% and refining accounts for 7%, according to an analysis by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
